Hobo Spiders

Spiders in general scare me silly. I realize that spiders eat other insects and generally don’t bother us unless they are bothered but I turn into a complete crazy lady if one is on me or near me. When I first began my journey in pest control it was quite comical. My customers would often hear screams and occasionally have the opportunity to witness the spider dance. I have gained some control since that first year but sometimes still have freak out moments.

With fall just around the corner, the hobo spiders will be making their way into your home looking for a warmer home or looking for a mate. Hobo spiders are easily confused with other spiders because of its common features and color. Females measure between 11-14 mm in body length and have slightly large abdomens than males.

Hobo Spiders feed on various insects and other spiders. They weave webs that are funnel shaped. When prey come in contact with the web it triggers vibrations that alert the spider.

These spiders usually defend themselves only when provoked or threatened. They are extremely protective of their egg sacs and will bite if they perceive a threat to their young.

Hobo control is best done by professionals but you can provide an environment that is unfriendly to the spider by following these easy steps.

• Cleaning: Reduce clutter around the home by sweeping dusting and hosing out cobwebs. Having clothes picked up off the floor with help prevent an accidental bite.

• Seal holes and cracks around windows, doors and where pipes enter the home.

• Use sticky traps to determine the infestation level around your home
